If you look at this 1 eye heaven & earth dzi bead, what do you see? There are no holes being drilled into this dzi bead.

Some believed that the contrast between a modern dzi bead and an old one might be detected by the timing the holes drilled.

In a modern dzi,

  • the holes are drilled ahead of its etching
  • both the holes drilled are very symmetrical or very straight

whilst in an old dzi

  • you can see that the holes drilled in from one side to the other might not symmetrical or that straight - one side the hole can be in the middle whilst the other side the hold is not right at the diameter but at the side
  • at the corner of these hole, you can also see corners that might have been runned/worned down in an uneven manner as a result of connecting the dzi bead with other harder crystals/stones

Of course, after saying that there are many more criteria in assessing a pure ancient dzi bead compared to a modern on.
